Grezan History

Grézan Castle is a Roman villa, home of a centurion. Later, it welcomed pilgrims who went to Santiago de Compostela.

From the end of the 12th century, the Order of Hospitallers (a religious and military order originating from the Christian chivalry of the Middle Ages) established commanderies throughout Europe, including one in Grézan.

These commanderies were land establishments which made it possible in particular to recover funds intended to finance the crusades in the Holy Land.

In 1824, the Mirepoix family began rebuilding the castle as we know it today, a "folly" inspired by a medieval castle, and built by Louis Garros, a Bordeaux architect. It was directly inspired by Eugène Viollet-Le-Duc, a famous 19th-century architect and restorer of the Cité de Carcassonne. It is no wonder that Château Grézan is called "Little Carcassonne".

In 1853, with the arrival of the railway, the wine trade made it possible to turn everything into gold. The owners bought land and built castles called the "Palais del'Aramonia", or more singularly, the "châteaux pinardiers", in different styles: neo-gothic, neo-renaissance or even second empire. At that time, it took "a harvest to build a castle".

Château Grézan, the only one in neo-medieval style, is one of the jewels of the wine châteaux of the Béziers region.
